| A beautiful expanse of green lawn is the first thing that jumps out
to greet visitors, and to soothe the home owner as he returns weary from a
day of work in the modern technological office. An expansive green lawn is not a mere thing of beauty. A man's lawn is a visible metaphor of his conquest of his allotted portion of the natural world. At night, while passing through or by his lawn, after a hard day's work, he translates his vanquishing of competitors at the work desk into his, personal subjugation of the natural world. To embellish the metaphor further, a well kept lawn is usually ringed with gardens backed by trees, a colorful reminder of our ancestral home in Garden of Eden, ringed by stately representatives of nature in the wild. Like a miniature pass through the Elysian Fields, the homeowner, upon reaching his door, has put aside all memory of his struggle of the day, and has replaced it with an awareness of a truer struggle and relationship with the natural order. |
